OAKVILLE ESTATE
For the past 40 years, Vine Cliff Winery has produced limited quantities of ultra-premium, estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville AVA. Vine Cliff Vineyard encompasses a hundred acre estate with various elevations and terraced slope orientations that range from valley floor to a bench vineyard at 680 feet elevation. Our Cabernet Sauvignon are reflective of our unique and highly acclaimed
terroir
and made in a balanced style with layer upon layer of subtlety and complexity.
Gentle fruit handling, small lot fermentations, and attention to quality are the rule for producing great Cabernet at Vine Cliff. Our grapes are hand-picked at night or in the early morning to give us cold fruit for processing. Careful winemaking, gentle techniques, and limited processing all contribute to wines that express the terroir of the Vine Cliff Estate. Our historic Oakville Estate vineyard consists of 25 acres, reaching up steep hillside terraces to the flat rocky red soil of the “Oakville Bench” at 400 feet above the valley floor. Vine Cliff Cabernet Sauvignon's first vintage in the modern era was the 1990. Since then, it has garnered high scores for every vintage.
The Private Stock name and logo are respectful of the original late 1800’s wine that earned recognition as the premier wine of Napa Valley. Today we honor that history by using that label for the very limited best of the best that our vineyard produces each year. In years past there were 16 rows of vines in the mountain bench vineyard that consistently produced the best lots of Cabernet Sauvignon. While those rows required replanting, the memory of 16 Rows remains on the label.

Vine Cliff Chardonnay grapes have mostly come from the renowned Los Carneros appellation. Vine Cliff has produced Chardonnay from other regions but the two wines that are currently available are the Los Carneros Chardonnay and the Proprietress Chardonnay.
The Los Carneros appellation is ideal for growing Chardonnay because of its cooler climate. The cool foggy mornings in conjunction with the afternoon breezes off San Pablo Bay allow the grapes to have a longer than average hang time for flavor development, while still retaining higher natural acidity. The clay loam soil is shallow and limits vine vigor and yield further intensifying the flavor and aroma profile of the resulting wines.
Our Proprietress Reserve Chardonnay is blended from the very best lots in a given vintage, demonstrating the depth, complexity and balance provided by the Carneros vineyard with thirteen separate blocks and seven different clone and rootstock selections.
Grapes from individual vineyard blocks were hand-picked separately in the cool early morning, then carefully hand sorted at the winery before whole cluster pressing. They were then pressed long and slow in the Crémant/Champagne style to minimize phenolic extraction, and maximizing freshness and acidity. After cold settling, the juice was gravity racked into French oak barrels for fermentation and aging.

Vine Cliff does, in certain years, make wines from grapes other than Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. These are in all cases limited production wines sold exclusively to Wine Club members and/or offered at the Tasting Room only. Recent vintages have included a Vine Cliff Cabernet Franc, a Syrah Rosé, a Grenache Rosé, the current Vine Cliff Russian River Rosé of Pinot Noir, the Vine Cliff Zinfandel, the Oakville Estate Malbec and a 2020 Riesling.
