Bud Break First Week of April,
The 100-acre Estate known as Vine Cliff is where the Sweeneys live. They are true stewards of this land that they live off and treat it as a living and breathing thing. Our Proprietress, Nell Sweeney, strives to improve the biodiversity and manage our land in a way that respects the existing ecosystems where even the tiniest living organism plays a role in the cycle of life and especially that of the vine.
It truly is special to be able to work in an ever-changing environment, with life all around you. Last week the vines were just starting bud break – where the buds that formed, last summer, swell and burst forth with the new life that will become this year’s grapevines and grapes. Now the end of this week is near, and we are experiencing the next stage of the vine’s life cycle – spring green shoots. The vines will be growing at approximately an inch a day until the next stage – flowering.
